How the Process Works...

 

1. Reference

A commission begins with selecting and discussing the photograph you would like me to work from. It’s essential to choose one that will translate well into a painting and it is always helpful for me to have access to a few other photos, especially for colour reference. See my reference photo guide for more about what would work as a suitable photograph.

2. Size and Background

After we have settled on a photograph, we can then decide on the size you would like and if you have any colour preferences for the background. My backgrounds are usually loose and subtly abstract so as not to distract from the main focus of your pet, but I can incorporate a pallet of your choice or discuss options that will compliment your pet’s unique colouring. We will also discuss mounting options for your completed painting and I will be able to offer you a time-frame (if you have one) and confirm the final cost.

3. Booking

If, at this stage, you feel that I’m the right artist to capture the essence of your pet and you are happy to proceed, a 25% deposit will be required to secure your slot in my diary. After this, I will let you know once I begin work on your portrait and will send you updates along the way.

4. The Final Stages

When I am close to completing your portrait, I will send you a watermarked proof for you to approve. This is when I am able to make any adjustments and I’m always happy to be guided by your input - you are the one who knows your pet the best and will be able to see if anything needs to be changed. Once you are happy with the final painting, I will finish it with a layer of fixative which will help protect it from UV and moisture damage.

5. On Completion

I will request the final balance plus shipping costs. Upon receiving this, I will send you your tracking number and your portrait will be carefully packed and shipped via a secure service along with a certificate of authenticity.
